Survivor's Sunset

I had been looking for a "horizontal" juniper for a long time. But this one was bent so close to the crack it grew out of, that I had to lie on the uneven rock in front of it to sketch it. The setting sun shone through the needles for a most wonderful effect. I continued to stalk the sunset, taking notes on colors and distant rock formations. I had to reverse the tree in order to get the composition right with a sense of the Rock needles of Canyonlands in the background. I knew what I was going to do the next morning when I returned to paint in a more level location.
